WHAT IS PERMANENT HAIR REMOVAL ACCORDING TO SILK’N?
All Silk’n devices make use of HPL™ technology to remove unwanted hair, including the Silk’n Glide. Silk’n Glide was designed to facilitate the long-term or permanent reduction of hair growth. Permanent reduction of hair growth is defined as a long-term stable reduction of the number of hairs that resume growth after a series of treatments.

BEFORE HPL™ TREATMENT:
Healthy hair follicles with a normal growth. The patented Silk’n technology can remove unwanted hair permanently using pulses of light.
DURING THE HPL™ HAIR REMOVAL PULSE:
Light energy is selectively absorbed in the hair shaft, transformed into heat and disables hair growing cells in the hair follicle.
AFTER THE HPL™ PULSE:
Energy is absorbed by the hair follicles while the surrounding tissue remains at normal temperature and hair removal is achieved.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OTHER HAIR REMOVAL METHODS
Various methods are used to remove unwanted hair: waxing, plucking and shaving. The longest-lasting effects are produced by laser or IPL (Intense Pulsed Light), for which you will need to visit a beauty salon or clinic. Many people find this inconvenient, as it takes a lot of time and is often expensive. Silk’n therefore invented HPL™ technology that will enable you to permanently remove unwanted hair using light in the privacy of your home. Durable HPL™ technology is derived from IPL and is considered to be its home version.
THE UNIQUE SKIN COLOUR SENSOR
All Silk’n hair removal devices make use of HPL™ and, in addition to this, they feature a unique, integrated skin colour sensor. Other hair removal devices do not have this feature. The skin colour sensor is designed to measure the colour of the section of the skin on which you are using the device. This unique safety mechanism prevents you from using the device in places where your skin is too dark or too tanned.
The difference between HPL™ and traditional hair removal methods such as shaving, waxing and plucking lies, above all, in the long-term effects. Using traditional hair removal methods the hair will resume its normal growth after it has been removed, because the hair shafts beneath the skin surface have not been effectd at all. The follicles can continue to develop hair, and you will need to continue shaving, waxing and plucking to remove it. This can vary between every other week to once every four weeks, depending on the method used.
The goal of HPL™, however, is to permanently remove unwanted hair. This technology selectively treats the hair follicles to disable further production of hair.
Laser hair removal is applied in beauty salons and clinics by trained professionals and require the application of a cooling gel to the skin before use. Laser is a narrow beam of light that requires very high energy. Lasers are not intended for home hair removal because of the high energy required and the risk involved in applying such narrow and intense light to the human body.
HPL™ devices emit extremely short pulses of filtered energy with a high peak. As result, the overall energy the device should generate is significantly lowet than laser, and is therefore suitable for use at home. Unlike laser treatments, HPL™ treatments are painless, and do not require the application of any gels.

Just as laser treatment, IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is applied in beauty salons and clinics. IPL is also used in home appliances for hair removal. However, there is a difference in the quantity of energy emitted in IPL home hair removal systems versus IPL salon hair removal systems. This has to do with safety, because a home system must, in principle, be operated safely without the intervention of a professional. As a result, all home systems use lower energy levels.
The HPL™ technology (Home Pulsed Light) developed by Silk’n is derived from the IPL technology used in salons. HPL™ uses a similar lower energy level to guarantee safety for home use. You could call it the home version of IPL. As previously mentioned, other brands have also marketed home appliances that feature IPL. These are also derived from the IPL technology used in salons. Yet there are some notable differences between these IPL home versions and Silk’n HPL™ that have to do with the light intensity (J/cm2) and the light spectrum (nm, nanometre). The process of removing unwanted hair by means of light and laser has become common knowledge. It has been considered a safe and effective method to attain the permanent removal of unwanted hair in clinics throughout the world for more than 15 years.
Hair removal based on light
The technology whereby hair is removed by means of optical energy is based on the theory of selective photothermolysis. This process delivers optical energy, either as laser or wide spectrum (IPL/HPL), which is absorbed by the dark melanin pigment of the hair shaft. The optical energy is then transformed into heat which destroys the hair shaft, and through the hair shaft – destroys the follicle permanently. The follicles that are destroyed cannot regrow a new hair shaft in the future. Optical energy is a selective energy and is only absorbed by the dark melanin pigment, with no effect to the surrounding epidermis.
HPL technology (Home Pulsed Light) developed by Home Skinovations is derived from the IPL technology which is used in the medical field and has been customized for home-use. The HPL technology uses lower energy levels along with high peak power to guarranty the best possible efficacy while maintaining the highest safety for home use.
